Learn the incredible Aboriginal and European Settlement history while you travel from Cairns, through the Daintree Rainforest, to Cooktown on your 2-day tour with Northwest Australian Safaris, including an overnight stay in Cooktown.
DAY 1. CAIRNS – DAINTREE RAINFOREST – COOKTOWN
Today your adventure starts in Cairns where your Wet Tropics accredited guide will pick you up from your accommodation. We travel the scenic Captain Cook Highway to the Daintree River Ferry before entering the heart of the Daintree Rainforest. We continue our journey through untouched rainforest onto the 4WD only Bloomfield track. Northwest Australian Safaris has access to a unique beachfront location where you will spend time with our private Aboriginal elder on his traditional lands. Speaking 9 different languages and healing people from around the world, he will give you an unparalleled insight into indigenous culture and history. A photo opportunity at the beautiful Bloomfield falls in Wujal Wujal marks the end of the iconic Bloomfield track. Enjoy the significant artwork at the Bana Yirriji Art and Culture Centre. Watch for crocodiles and wildlife while enjoying a delicious fresh lunch on the banks of the Bloomfield river. Following lunch, we visit the historic Lion’s Den hotel, first opened in 1876. Throughout this incredible day you will learn all about the European settlement history of this iconic area before arriving at your Queenslander Guesthouse accommodation in Cooktown. After enjoying the sunset over the Endeavour River, dinner tonight is a delicious banquet at the locally famous Jackey Jackey Thai Restaurant.
STAY AT HISTORIC QUEENSLANDER GUESTHOUSE – COOKTOWN (LD)
DAY 2. COOKTOWN - CAIRNS
After enjoying a fresh breakfast at your accommodation, you will have a fantastic opportunity to explore Cooktown. Captain James Cook spent substantial time here by accident in 1770 after the HMS Endeavour ran into a reef and the ship sailed into the Endeavour River for repair, where he met the local Guugu Yimidhirr people. Cooktown was founded in 1873 as a port for the Palmer River Goldfields and has a colourful history of settlement and Aboriginal culture. Enjoy wonderful stories of history and aboriginal culture of this region as your guide takes a step back in time and helps you to understand the regions colourful past. A visit to the James Cook Museum is a must to learn about the rich and diverse history of Cooktown. Your guide will also take you for a guided walk through the Town Cemetery, Cooktown Botanic Gardens and spectacular Finch Bay before enjoying a water front seafood lunch, with fish directly from the boats (lunch at your own expense). The diversity of North Queensland environments will astound you as we travel south from Cooktown through open Savannah woodland and the Palmer River Goldfields. Visit the famous Palmer River Roadhouse for a cold drink before continuing over The Great Escarpment back into your accommodation in Cairns. (B)
